What's Good

  • No nonsense, easily actionable advice; the complexity surrounding personal finance (and the mystique surrounding many banks, credit cards, and financial advisors) is stripped down to the basics, explained in everyday terms, and simple step-by-step advice is given to build up your financial management skills.
  • Lots of frontline experience; the author has a lot of detailed, anecdotal advice that lines up with other books I’ve read about personal finance (always double and triple check any advice about money), and has successfully used the strategies in this book to build an impressive business and his own personal worth.
  • Very casual & forthright presentation; the author does a great job of approaching typically boring (and sometimes frightening) subject matter in an easily comprehensible, shoot from the hip manner, so that the content can be easily understood and followed.

What Can Be Improved

The Bottom Line

  • A great starting point for personal finance; even if you don’t want to dive into the more advanced concepts of investing right away (which the author simplifies incredibly well), this book is a great resource for those that want to get their spending under control and be more educated about the financial decisions they make.
  • For anyone that needs to get started with personal finance; while other books go into more detail (see the links above), this is a very approachable starting point that anyone can benefit from.
  • A must-have; the easy-to-follow advice in this book (that is less than $20) will save you lots of money on day-to-day expenses (i.e. bank fees, credit card interest, unconscious spending, etc.) even if you have nothing to invest yet, and will only help you more as your finances grow more complex.
