What's Good

  • Tackles the difficult subject of leadership very well; the hard-to-grasp and often esoteric subject of motivation is simplified, condensed, and presented wonderfully.
  • Thoroughly researched; each chapter is well-sourced, and outside research from a wide variety of sources is used to formulate and back up the ideas presented.
  • Written for everyone; every concept and example is presented in jargon-free, everyday language so that anyone can pick this book up and learn something useful.

What Can Be Improved

  • A few opportunities for refinement; in a few cases, the author repeats himself with additional examples when a slightly more in-depth examination of the already presented ones would be of more value (i.e. specific instances of a proposed idea having both qualitative and quantitative effects, what those specific effects look like, etc.).

The Bottom Line

  • Critical knowledge for organizational UX success; this book offers UX professionals (amounts others) an insightful way to critically look at the organizations they work for, determine if the qualitative infrastructure is in place for the practice of our craft, and how to begin enacting change to work towards design/organizational maturity.
  • For any professional at any skill level to learn more about organizational behaviour; with virtually all of our jobs hinging upon organization culture and purpose in some way, this book presents critical knowledge for recognizing and potentially affecting that purpose through our own professional contributions, or knowing when to move on when those things are absent.
  • The value here is a no-brainer; if you shop around a little bit this fantastic book can be had for around $10 (or free from your public library), and is absolutely worth having in your collection.
